t o d a y

I have several new projects in the works... a new crochet piece, a new embroidery (a mini-quilt, I think) and an idea for a new knitting pattern! I was out and about most of the day yesterday so today I'm hoping to stay at home and get some things accomplished here. I hope I can stick to my plan!

The Heart has many Doors-

a small drawing that includes some words
by Emily Dickinson
...
The Heart has many Doors -
I can but knock-
For an sweet "Come in"
Impelled to hark-
Not saddened by repulse,
Repast to me
That somewhere, there exists,
Supremacy-

free knitting pattern :: greensleeves coffee cozy

"Let the sky rain potatoes! Let it thunder to the tune of Greensleeves!"
- The Merry Wives of Windsor (Shakespeare)

The Greensleeves tune is stuck in my head quite frequently... I can never remember all the words, so I replace them with lyrics about my cats! And now Greensleeves is also the name of my newest free knitting pattern! It's green, it's a coffee sleeve, its Greensleeves:

I wanted to make another pattern that would be good for knitters learning to use double pointed needles (I know they can be scary at first!) and I think this is just the thing. The simple knitting and purling combination, Aran yarn, and small project size keep it from being too intimidating. Plus, it's great for girls & guys, for keeping or gifting!

For this project you will need a set of four US8 / 5mm double pointed needles, one stitch marker, a tapestry needle, and about 50 grams of Aran 10ply yarn (Red Heart, TLC, and Vanna's Choice are common, inexpensive yarns that work great for this pattern).

Cast on 33 stitches and divide them onto three of your DPN's (11 on each needle).

Join your work for knitting in the round (be careful not to get your stitches twisted) and place a marker to mark the beginning of the round.

Rounds 1-5: Knit all stitches.

Rounds 6-10: Purl all stitches.

Repeat rounds 1-10 twice more.

Repeat rounds 1-5 one more time.

Your coffee cozy should now have 7 horizontal sections alternating between knit and purl designs. This makes it kind of springy, like an accordion!

Bind off and use your tapestry needle to weave in your loose ends.

*If you are new to DPN's, you will want to be careful about "laddering", especially on your purl rows. "Laddering" refers to stitches that are looser where two DPN's come together, making them look wider or off from the rest of the stitches. If you notice that this is happening to your work you can tighten your knitting tension when you come to these areas OR you can periodically shift some stitches around on your DPN's so that they aren't always stacked in the same columns (there are some great tips for dealing with laddering here).

thrift score!

I had a major thrift score over the weekend! I went to my little neighborhood thrift shop on Saturday afternoon and found out that they are switching owners in July and many of the booths are changing... this is worrisome because I always find great stuff at l-o-w prices at this shop and I don't know what it will be like when things change in July... but it was also a bit of luck because some of the booths were having big sales and I found a ton of wood frames and plaques to use in my artwork!

I got all of these pieces for a total of $7!

I ordered a bunch of yarn and paint on Saturday, too, so I'll have plenty of supplies for my new projects. My shop has been needing a restock of sculptural crochet, so this is perfect timing!

deep turquoise

A new soft sculpture in my favorite deep turquoise...

... I sold two hand crocheted sculptures out of the shop today (they are off to Switzerland!) so I'm busy making more to fill the void! I ordered some supplies last night and will have to hit the thrift store this weekend to hunt down a few new wood bases...

I have already started one in white and plan to add more aqua, turquoise, and apple green...

*green*space*

Did you know that living around green spaces can improve your health? I read this little article from BBC News today... 15 out of 24 major health problems were lower among people who live near green spaces! Here are some photos from my last walk enjoying one of the green spaces near my home...

If anyone knows the identity of this plant I'd love to hear it! They have been popping up everywhere this spring and I'm very curious...

w i l d food

My amazing husband found this book over the weekend...

... we are trying all kinds of edible plants foraged from the (safe) areas around our home. We have a pretty wide area that we cover on foot & bike on a daily basis, so this is a really fun activity to add to that routine!

I found an excellent berry patch (my secret, I will not reveal it's location!) and some wild garlic, too. We also found wood sorrel (in the top photo) and sow thistle (below)...

We mixed the wood sorrel and sow thistle with home-grown chard in burritos last night and it was quite enjoyable... I really like the tart taste of the sorrel!

I know we'll be finding many more edibles this spring and summer : )

*happy monday to you*

Happy Monday to you! I had a busy and fun weekend full of accomplishments : ) Running, gardening, and foraging adventures... reading, relaxing, and smoothie drinking... I even finished some embroidery for the shop!

A new mini-quilt (bigger than my embroidered notes and it comes with a silver clip for hanging)...

and a bookmark, too! Emily Dickinson, of course...

There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul

foraging spring fruit

My urban scavenging is taking many forms these days (dumpster dives, roadside finds, pecans in the park) and as of Monday it has expanded further... berry picking! It definitely pays off to be the girl who walks and bikes everywhere because I notice all of these cool things! I was walking to post office on Monday (a beautiful, sunny day) and I took a different route to avoid the tornado chaos. This route just happens to skirt a large, heavily wooded park. As I walked along I noticed a bunch of wild berries growing in the woods all along the way! I picked a few of the ripe ones (leaving most of the little woodland creatures to enjoy) and took a couple of leaves so that I could come back to identify the plants properly before I ate them.

After I verified that they are, indeed, wild blackberries and huckleberries I ate them as a delicious snack! I'm heading back that way today and plan to check on the crop. Foraging is becoming one of my new favorite hobbies... I need to look for a book to take with me when I walk to help me identify all of these awesome plants on the spot (if anyone has any recommendations, I'd love to hear them!).

Retro Lady

I came up with a new retro-style ear warmer last weekend!

It will be perfect to wear this fall and winter when the cold winds start to blow. The design was inspired by turban-style scarves and hats from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. I like to wear the knot at the top of my head, but you can wear it on the side, too. I love that it looks like a cool headband, but works perfectly as an ear warmer!

Check out these awesome inspiration photos! (I just love Rosie the Riveter type girls!)

This one is fabulous, too...

I wrote up the pattern for you and it's available in my my Etsy shop and on Ravelry... more photos here!
