Announcing Flower Moon!

My hard drive has been replaced and I'm so glad because I have a big announcement!  I have decided to move the blog and give it a new name - a big change, but one I have been planning with excitement.  This has been a huge year of personal growth for me and I am ready to expand in new directions.  You will now be able to find me at Flower Moon.  I will be filling this new space with a lot of great content including more knitting and crochet patterns, DIY projects, recipes, and tons of inspiring photos.  In addition, I will be focusing more on my love of herbal preparations, natural living, artists, and writers.

I hope you will update your bookmarks, Bloglovin', and all the rest and join me over at Flower Moon

In case you are wondering, I have already imported my favorite projects from this blog to Flower Moon, so you will be able to find them there.  Yay!

{Tea Consultation}

Today I'd like to share with you the Ayurvedic tea consultation I mentioned a couple of weeks ago.  I did this consultation through email with Lindsay of Whole Body Alchemy and I loved it!  It was a beautiful experience and I've been having fun trying the tips I received.

Lindsay sent me a questionnaire to fill out and within a couple of days she sent me a file with information about my doshas (I'm a vata-pitta), advice on yoga poses to try, foods to incorporate into my diet, and general lifestyle recommendations.  She also sent me an herbal tea blended just for me and she included blue cornflowers!  Such a wonderful way to honor my work here and in my shop!  The package also included a tea ritual, herbal soap, and a stone painted with a key word chosen just for me.

My tea also included fennel, sarsparilla, licorice, and brahmi.  I have been drinking it daily and especially enjoy it in the evenings.  I also started incorporating the Moon Salutation yoga sequence into my routine.   I would absolutely recommend this consultation to anyone interested in tea, herbs, yoga, or natural health.

spring has arrived and it is P I N K !

Mother Nature has been painting the landscape pink!  Looking through my camera this week has reminded me how many gorgeous shades of this color exist and how happy I am to see them after the dreary winter months.  I hope you enjoy my snapshots!

Recipe :: Make-Ahead Breakfast for a Week

Food and healthy eating habits have been on my mind a lot lately.  I am completing a nutrition course for my nursing degree and just finished a big project in which I had to track my food intake and analyze how my diet fared in terms of calories, saturated fat, sugar, sodium, protein, carbohydrates, and all of the important vitamins and minerals.  I am also working on an Ayurvedic consultation to learn more about my doshas and the foods/yoga/etc. that help keep me balanced.  I'll be sharing more about that consultation in a week or two when I've had time to try out some of the recommendations (and I get a tea blend personalized to my dosha balace!).

As I've been scrutinizing my diet on these two levels, one thing has really jumped out: creating a routine around eating is one of the most important things I can do for myself.  I like to think that I choose healthy foods most of the time (I always got the recommended fruit and veg in my nutrition report project!), but I can see that my unhealthy choices usually happen when I haven't planned properly for meals and snacks and let myself get too hungry.  So, my new goal is to become a better planner and create an eating schedule that includes foods that are nutrient-dense and easy to digest.

My first step in this process is creating a make-ahead breakfast for the entire week.  It includes a bunch of healthy ingredients, comes together in minutes if you make it assembly line-style, and makes it easy to eat a healthy meal on even the groggiest of mornings.

Here is my method:
1. Line up 7 containers to hold each day's meal.  You can use little plastic bags like I did, or opt for glass jars or some other container.  The choice is yours.

2. Go down the line and fill each container with the following ingredients: 1/2 cup of oats (just plain quick-cooking or rolled oats are fine), 1 tablespoon plain sliced almonds, 1 tablespoon raisins, 1 teaspoon chia seeds.

3. Seal each container.  Finished!

I eat this breakfast mix by pouring it in a bowl and adding 1/2 cup of plain almond or soy milk, stirring it, and letting it sit for a few minutes to soak up the milk and soften.  You could also cook it in the microwave or on the stove as you would for oatmeal.  I will often have a banana, too, if I'm feeling quite hungry.

Here are a few reasons I structured the recipe the way I did (besides the fact that it's so quick and easy!):
Oats are a whole grain and a good source of dietary fiber.
Raisins add a little sweetness and even contribute some extra fiber and iron.
Almonds are a good source of vitamin E, calcium, and the monounsaturated fats that reduce LDL    cholesterol.
Chia seeds help you feel full and reduce food cravings.  They are also rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.

Topping your breakfast mix with 1/2 cup of fortified almond or soy milk contributes calcium, vitamin D, and other vitamins, too.

I calculated the calories for this breakfast mix, including the plain almond milk I had in my fridge, and came up with 303 calories.  That's a reasonable calorie intake for a small meal packed with  nutrients.  You could even add a piece of fruit and a cup of herbal tea!

mixing up some scented skincare!

This morning I took some time to make a batch of skincare products for spring.  This spring I want to surround myself with peaceful floral scents and a bit of patchouli.  I made a small jar of coconut oil moisturizer scented with plenty of lavender.  I use this on my face, neck cuticles, feet, and anywhere that feels dry.  I also made a jar of homemade deodorant (I shared the recipe here) scented with palmarosa oil and a touch of lavender.  And the spray bottle is just water scented with copious amounts of flowery oils that I spray everywhere : )

This week I need to bike over to the health food store to pick up some patchouli.  I have a little dropper bottle perfect for mixing up some perfume oil!

{new art in my house}

This afternoon we attended the Druid City Arts Festival and purchased some new art work!  It was so much fun and we found several new pieces that we absolutely love.

These two prints are just so cool.  When I saw the cat piece on the left I almost died of happiness.  You can find the artist here.

This gorgeous photograph was taken by a University of Alabama student. She was so nice and had a lot of lovely work for sale.  You can find her here.

And these two folk art pieces just make me smile every time I see them!  We decided to hang them in our kitchen to give it some personality.  It worked : )  You can find the artist here.

{friday} moments

Have you tried making your own popcorn in a paper bag  yet?  I saw this tip on Pinterest a few weeks ago and it has become one of my favorite snacks!  I make it by putting 1/4 cup of popcorn  in a brown paper lunch bag and folding the top over twice, then microwaving it for 2 minutes.  I learned in my nutrition class that plain popcorn is considered a healthy whole grain option and this is such an easy way to make it.

I passed these sweet-smelling flowers yesterday and they reminded me that warm weather is on its way (I hope!).

g r a n n i e s

I stopped at the yarn shop this morning for a few beautiful skeins of Noro for a new afghan!  I am in love with the rich colors and I can't wait to see how the project develops as each new color comes out of the skein.

I also finished a throw blanket earlier this week entirely crocheted from yarn scraps (you can see a photo from when I started it here).

I am on Spring Break this week so it's great to have time to work on big projects like this!
